Weight Control: Growing Healthy
Diabetes, hypertension, and other obesity-related chronic diseases that are prevalent among adults have now become more common in youngsters. The percentage of children and adolescents who are overweight and obese is now higher than ever before. Poor dietary habits and inactivity are reported to contribute to the increase of obesity in youth.
Our program is designed to expose children and adolescents to proper strength training techniques, the importance of cardiovascular exercise, and to provide information needed to assist them in making healthy food choices.
This Weight Contril program lays the groundwork for our students and their parents to make healthy changes in their lives. Our weight loss goal is 1-2 pounds, per four (4) week cycle.
When children sign up for our program we require the parent/guardian to complete our Health History and our Emergency Contact forms. We then weigh the child and take measurements. This information gives us a baseline and helps us design a program that fits the child's needs. At any time during the program, if we see that the child is advancing, we are able to make changes to their program. When their four (4) week cycle has been completed, we weigh each child and re-measure to determine the amount of progress they have achieved. When a child signs up for another cycle, they utilize another program that we have custom designed, and takes into account the progress they have made from the last cycle. Our program changes as our students physical fitness changes.
Our Weight Loss Program also includes two (2) mandatory sessions of nutrition education and information, and the parents must also attend. In addition to devoting two(2) classes to nutrition education, every class meeting has a nutrition discussion and goal setting component, as well as educable moments during the class.
Growing Healthy uses the state of the art Hoist Brand KL Line of exercise equipment. This commercial grade line of equipment is used for strength training and is manufactured exclusively for kids. All machines are sized proportionately smaller then adult equipment, so that kids can maintain proper technique and help to reduce the risk of injury.
Growing Healthy also uses the latest interactive technology to provide fun cardiovascular activities for our clients. We have the Cateye Brand game bike that is an interacitve kid powered bicycle. Our clients feel like they are in a race or in the game while riding the bike. We also have Dance, Dance Revolution, where kids can play by themselves against the computer or they can challenge a partner. We also use the treadmill and the elliptical trainer as adjuncts for cardiovasicular exercise.
Our wight loss program also recognizes that our clients are kids. Kids need to get outside and play, so we incorporate outdoor activities. We have a "BIG" soccer ball, we use it to play soccer and have relay races. We also play tag, bach ball hiagh and jump rope. All of these activities are disigned to show kids how to exercise away from class so that our goal of weight loss and healthy living is achieved, as well as presenting opportunities to engage in teamwork in a limited competitive environment.
